Kazakhstan joins the IRC’s growing network of lung health advocates

15 October 2026

The International Respiratory Coalition (IRC) is delighted to welcome the Kazakhstan Respiratory Coalition to our growing network of advocates dedicated to improving lung health.

Respiratory disease remains an important public health issue in Kazakhstan; diseases of the respiratory system accounted for 10.2% of all deaths in 2025, according to the Bureau of National Statistics.

The coalition’s early priorities include efforts to improve prevention and earlier diagnosis of COPD, better access to high-quality spirometry, targeted screening and case-finding approaches, and more personalised treatment.

Coalition member Roza Bakenova, Associate Professor and President of Breathe Academy, said:

“We want to create a national platform where clinicians, patients, researchers, public health professionals and policymakers can identify shared priorities and work together to improve respiratory health and care. Our longer-term goal is to translate clinical data and research into practical improvements in prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation, and to contribute to the development of a national respiratory health strategy for Kazakhstan.

“We hope to share the experience with other IRC coalitions and adapt international best practice to the Kazakhstan healthcare context, particularly in COPD early detection, quality-assured spirometry, ILD and severe uncontrolled asthma care, pulmonary rehabilitation and respiratory registries.”

The IRC warmly welcomes the coalition and looks forward to supporting its work towards a future where fewer people in Kazakhstan suffer from preventable and treatable lung conditions.
