Swedish coalition takes first steps to tackle uncontrolled asthma with IRC seed funding

6 July 2026

The Swedish Coalition Against Uncontrolled Asthma (Astmakontroll Sverige) recently received International Respiratory Coalition (IRC) seed funding to support its launch, using the grant to bring together nine organisations representing patients, researchers, and healthcare professionals from both primary and specialist care for an in-person start-up meeting.

All the partners are united around a shared goal: tackling uncontrolled asthma in Sweden. During the meeting, partners agreed a Memorandum of Understanding, established a governance structure, and launched several working groups.

Two groups are currently building the evidence base, with one focused on mapping the current situation around uncontrolled asthma in Sweden and another reviewing patient education initiatives at home and internationally to identify gaps and good practice.

A third group is developing a patient education platform through a co-creation process involving patients, healthcare professionals and researchers.

Chair of the Swedish respiratory coalition, Prof. Christer Janson, said:

“The IRC support has enabled us to bring together key stakeholders around a common goal. Thanks to the seed funding, we were able to meet in person and hold a collaborative workshop that gave the coalition a flying start. The meeting created a positive, constructive and energetic atmosphere, and allowed us to move quickly from ideas to concrete action.”

The coalition’s ambition is to ensure that many more people living with asthma in Sweden achieve good asthma control and can live their lives without unnecessary limitations.
