UKRAINE

The Ukrainian Respiratory Coalition (URC) was established in 2024 to improve lung health for Ukrainian citizens. In Ukraine, 4.2 million people live with respiratory diseases, contributing to 131,300 deaths and 3.2 million healthy life years lost annually.

The URC’s long-term goal is to reduce respiratory mortality by 2030 by building an effective national system for tackling respiratory diseases. To achieve this, the coalition is working to:

• Raise public awareness of prevention, vaccination and healthy lifestyles through educational campaigns engaging media, communities and schools
• Strengthen medical infrastructure through professional development for doctors
• Develop and implement national treatment standards based on international best practice
• Improve access to vaccines and medicines, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, older people and patients with chronic diseases
• Improve monitoring and data collection on respiratory diseases

Near-term priorities include conducting a national needs assessment, drafting a national respiratory strategy, piloting education programmes in high-risk areas and securing funding from government, NGOs and private partners.
